Match Report: Valencia CF go through to Copa del Rey quarter-finals with victory over CD Atlético Baleares (0-1)

Marcos André on target for Valencia CF in the opening minute

Valencia CF visited CD Atlético Baleares on Sunday 16th of January at the Estadio Balear at 12 pm kick-off time (local time) in the round of 16 knockout tie of the Copa del Rey.

Valencia CF were off to a strong start with Marcos André breaking the deadlock in the early goings of the game.

Uroš Račić headed it on in behind the opposition defence and Marcos André capitalised on an opposition let-off at the back and slotted it home past Xavi Guinard.

Valencia CF dictated both play and tempo after the opening goal and had further chances to double their lead through Yunus Musah with a smart backheel flick following a fine link-up play between Uroš Račić and José Luis Gayà who delivered an inviting cross into Yunus, but Xavi Guinard claimed it.

Valencia CF kept on pushing and piling the pressure on the opposition from set-pieces. So much so that they came mighty close to doubling their lead on 36 minutes.

A José Luis Gayà effort which was scrambled off the line at the second time of asking pushing it away and sticking his leg out to keep the scoreline at 0-1.

Both sides kept on pushing but the first half finished 0-1 for Valencia CF at the Estadio Baleares.

Valencia CF had a quiet start to the second half and soon enough the game saw as a grittier spell with both sides trying to find a foothold in the second half and picking up yellow cards in the process.

José Bordalás shuffled his pack over the mark with Marcos André and Uroš Račić making way for Gonçalo Guedes and Dimitri Foulquier respectively.

Koba Leïn saw his effort go wide of the mark after a Gonçalo Guedes pass. Alas, it was the opposition who had the initiative in the way of danger.

Valencia CF managed to see the tie through and edge CD Altético Barleares to progress to the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey.

Valencia CF will return to LaLiga action in midweek to welcome Sevilla FC on Wednesday 19th of January at Mestalla at 9:30 pm kick-off time on Matchday 21 of LaLiga.
